Unlocking the Art of Rug Placement: Lounge, Dining, and Bedroom

Choosing a rug involves considering various factors like texture, fibres, colours, size, and patterns. But equally important is its placement. A well-placed rug can transform the dynamics of a room, highlighting its features and tying everything together. Whether under a coffee table, defining a dining area, or softening footsteps in a bedroom, the right placement is key to bringing a room to life. Stay tuned for Lounge, Dining and Bedroom rug placement tips.

01.

Living Room Rug Placement

The living room is typically the largest space and a central part of most homes. Therefore, the theme and size of the rug for this area must not only complement the decor but also be large enough to accommodate the furniture. When a rug is too small, it creates what's known as the "floating island" effect, making the room feel smaller and less cohesive.

As a standard practice (though not a strict rule), the rug should extend at least 10cm under the feet of the furniture. It's not necessary for the rug to cover the entire floor; leaving a gap of about 30cm between the wall and the rug can help create a visually balanced and harmonious look in the room.

Dining Room Rug Placement

When choosing a rug for your dining space, ensure it mirrors the shape of your table and is large enough to accommodate both the table and chairs comfortably. Extend the rug from the table's edge by the depth of your chair plus an additional 20cm for ideal sizing. Opt for stain-resistant materials like wool for durability, especially in dining rooms. Round rugs paired with round tables create a harmonious vibe and work well in smaller spaces.

Bedroom Rug Placement

When it comes to bedroom rugs, comfort is key. Placing your rug so that you have approximately 60-70cm next to your bed provides a plush feeling underfoot when you step out in the morning. For stability, ensure that bedside tables are either completely on or off the rug; alternatively, the rug can be placed just in front of them.

An economical option is to use runners on either side of the bed.

Ideally, at least two-thirds of the rug should fit under the bed, with around 90cm of rug extending around the sides for easy stepping. This setup not only adds comfort but also enhances the aesthetic appeal of your bedroom space.
